MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX (CBS ATLANTA) -
An honor student in Texas was thrown in*jail after she missed too many classes at her high school.

A judge issued Diane Tran, 17, a summons Wednesday for her excessive truancy after she missed class. She was arrested in open court.

Last month, Tran was issued a warning by the judge for missing school.

Tran said she works*both full-time and part-time jobs, in addition to taking advanced and college*level courses.

But the judge said Tran's case was bigger than the individual situation of one student.

"If you let one run loose, what are you gonna' do with the rest of 'em?," said Judge Lanny Moriarty. "Let them go too?*A little stay in the jail for one night is not a death sentence."

But Tran's classmates said she had a lot more to juggle than the average teen.

"She goes from job to job from school. She stays up until 7 a.m. in the morning doing her homework," said Devin Hill, a classmate and co-worker.

On top of that, Tran said her parents spilt up and moved away, leaving her to support her younger sister.

The judge admitted that*he wanted to make an example of the teen.*Tran had to spend 24 hours in jail and pay a $100 fine.

asshole. she is an example. a great example of a young woman who works, goes to school and supports her sister. she's dealing with more at her age than she should have to, and assholes like this have to make things harder for her.

There's that Texas common sense that makes me warm and fuzzy, it shines best when crime and education collide. You go Judge dumb as a box of rocks.

Geez, make an example of someone who skips school and doesn't give a shit about it, if you have to. This is someone who keeps up with their classes. Maybe jail the parents, if you have to throw SOMEONE in jail. This is unacceptable.

Wow. She works 2 jobs, takes college level courses and her parents aren't around so she is basically raising her younger sister? THROW THAT DEGENERATE IN JAIL IMMEDIATELY. She is a threat to others.

    Fucking idiot judge.

Weird, I thought the law only enforced school from 6-16, so how is she even in trouble at her age?

Doesn't you have to pay for college in the US? If yes, then you should have the right to attend or not.

I guess the judge gets paid by some corporation to put more people into jail so they have free workers.

Yes, but she seems like a high achieving high schooler who is taking college courses as part of her hs curriculum.

    What bullshit.

Like someone said upthread, why isn't this judge going after her parents who skipped out raising their kids? I'd like to slap that judge right in the mouth.

Yeah all that running loose from job to job to class to home to take care of her sibling. What a hellraiser.

    Maybe I missed something:
